Deseret Generation and Transmission Cooperative Goes Live on Oracle eAM

"Mine to Mouth" Operation addresses cost, reporting, and integration needs with new ERP solution

About Deseret Power

Deseret Generation and Transmission Cooperative ("Deseret Power") supplies wholesale electricity to its members (six retail distribution cooperatives) and other bulk energy customers in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. The member-owned utility operates 300 miles of transmission lines, and it has interests in two power generation facilities in Utah with about 500 MW of capacity. Deseret also operates its own coal mine, which fuels its main power plant, through subsidiary Blue Mountain Energy. Other generation support operations include the transportation of coal by railroad and the development of a limestone extraction facility.

Deseret Power was running a legacy system that was no longer supported and difficult to maintain. According to the Bonanza Plant, "Our system is no different than any other piece of equipment. It was aging and needed to be replaced. It was no longer economically viable to maintain." Deseret Power also needed an ERP system that would integrate the Power Plant and the Coal Line operations. The information sharing between the two businesses units was limited resulting in poor visibility across the supply chain. Building reports was time-consuming and were generally unable to meet changing business conditions. The solution: Oracle's E-Business Suite implemented by Z & A Inc., an experienced E-Business Suite partner.

Projects Goals
  • Improve Inventory Management
  • Reduce Purchasing Spending
  • Reduce Maintenance Costs
  • Reduce System Support Cost

Working with closely with RM Glenn Seninger and ASM Rick Barta to understand the customer's requirements, Z & A Inc. assembled a project team from its 70+ Oracle consultants. After mapping the customer's requirements to the E-Business Suite, Z & A Inc. led a Proof of Concept that demonstrated how the software would address Deseret's business and technology issues. Z & A Inc. also helped Deseret develop a project benchmark that identified a payback period of 16 months. In three years, Deseret expects a 143% return on their investment!

Modules Implemented

Z & A Inc. and Deseret implemented the E-Business Suite Modules in just 8 months on time and under budget. The project included software installation, training, and post-production support and involved the following E-Business Suite modules:

  • Enterprise Asset Management (eAM)
